Our Assessment

Why we recommend The Residence Tunisia.

The Residence Tunisia is not a single property but an idea in two climates: a coastal resort in Gammarth north of Tunis with its own thalassotherapy centre, and a desert resort in Douz at the edge of the Sahara. Both belong to the Cenizaro group and share the same commitment to architecture and stillness. We recommend combining both — this makes for one of the most unusual itineraries in the region.

We recommend a combination of at least three nights in Douz and three in Gammarth — in that order, starting with the desert, to feel the contrast upon arriving at the sea. The Douz rooms and images are considerably more contemporary than those of the Tunis property; guests with high photographic expectations should prioritise Douz. Cenizaro group, owner-led management philosophy.

What stays with you
A camel ride on the hotel's own promenade at Douz, the sands of the Grand Erg Oriental as the horizon — the most considered way to set foot in the desert for the first time.
  • Douz sits at the edge of the Sahara — not a day trip but an immersion: the hotel organises desert expeditions, night rides and stargazing experiences without group logistics.
  • The Residence Tunis holds one of North Africa's largest thalassotherapy centres: seawater pools, marine mud treatments and medically supervised wellness programmes.
  • Morning hammam ceremony in a vaulted chamber, evening dinner in a colonnaded restaurant with Moorish ornament — both houses carry an architectural language that cannot be bought elsewhere.
  • Tunisia combines Mediterranean coast, Sahara, and UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Carthage and Sousse within a compact geography — The Residence is the most coherent base for both.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel October to April for the Sahara, spring and autumn for the coast

Tunisia splits into two climates. The coast at Gammarth is Mediterranean with mild winters and warm summers; spring and autumn are quietest. In the Sahara at Douz the summer from May to September is too hot for outdoor activity, while October to April brings pleasant days and cool, clear nights. The two properties combine sensibly by season.

  • October to April (Sahara season) In Douz days of 18 to 25C, cool nights, clear desert skies. The best time for camel rides and erg excursions.
  • March to June and September to November (coast) Mild 20 to 28C in Gammarth, calm sea, ideal for thalasso and Carthage. The quietest and finest months.
  • July to August (high summer) The Sahara turns punishing, the coast fills up. Avoid desert activity; coast only with heat tolerance.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Camel ride into the Grand Erg Oriental

From the property's promenade at Douz, a camel ride leads to the edge of the great sand sea, best in the soft hour before sunset. The transition from oasis into open desert is part of the experience.

  2. Thalasso programme in Gammarth

The coastal resort has its own thalassotherapy centre using seawater, algae and the Mediterranean climate for multi-day treatments. A counterpoint to the dry heat of the desert half of the same trip.

  3. Stars over the Sahara at Douz

Far from coastal light, the desert sky above Douz offers clear nights in the cool months. An evening beyond the property where the sand sea and the band of stars meet.

  4. Moorish architecture as a walk of the house

Both properties work with Moorish arches and domed vaults that take up Tunisian craft. A quiet walk through the patios and courtyards opens up a design that elsewhere would be mere backdrop.

Local Experiences

What shapes the stay.

  • Carthage and the Bardo National Museum in Tunis: two of North Africa's most significant archaeological sites are under an hour from Gammarth.
  • Chott el-Jerid: the largest salt lake in North Africa, between Douz and Tozeur — at sunset a colour experience that no camera fully captures.
  • Matmata: the underground Berber troglodyte villages, three hours from Douz — one of the few places where the word 'original' still applies.
