Our Assessment

Why we recommend andBeyond Galápagos Explorer.

The andBeyond Galápagos Explorer is the most coherent way to experience the Galápagos — twenty guests, National Park-certified naturalist guides and anchorage in zones that larger vessels cannot reach. An expedition format that follows the rhythm of the islands, not the preferences of its passengers.

The Galápagos is not a destination where the choice of vessel is secondary — it is decisive. Twenty guests versus a hundred creates a qualitative difference in every landing scene. We know the Explorer and recommend it for travellers who want to make the most of a limited time window. Christian Göbel has visited the islands multiple times and can advise concretely on which itinerary suits your interests.

Fit & Season

When this property truly shines.

Best season
Year-round. July to November: rougher sea, better diving visibility, Galápagos sharks more frequently sighted. December to May: warmer water, turtle nesting season, waved albatross on Española (April to December).
Ideal for
Nature-oriented travellers seeking a single focused Galápagos voyage in a small, well-run format. Not a cruise format — an expedition that respects the limits of the protected area and thereby gains access to sites others cannot reach.

What stays with you
Mornings snorkelling with marine iguanas and Galápagos penguins, evenings watching the sun set over Pinnacle Rock from the observation deck — the Explorer moves between these worlds without the transitions feeling staged.
  • A maximum of twenty guests: encounters with sea lions, blue-footed boobies and flightless cormorants happen without crowding, without managing a larger group around you.
  • Galápagos National Park Level III certified naturalists: this is the highest guide licence the reserve issues, not a marketing description.
  • Two alternating itineraries — western and eastern islands — mean guests can experience both halves of the archipelago on two consecutive voyages.
  • andBeyond conservation framework: no single-use plastics onboard, biodegradable products, contributions to the Charles Darwin Foundation included in the stay.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel Sailable year round; the season shapes the experience.

Galapagos has two seasons, both worthwhile. The warm, wet season from December to May brings air around 25 to 30 degrees, water near 25 degrees, calmer seas and strong snorkelling visibility. The cool, dry season from June to November brings cooler water from 19 degrees, rougher seas and especially active wildlife driven by the nutrient-rich Humboldt Current.

  • December to May Warm and wet, water near 25 degrees, calm seas, clear visibility. Tortoise nesting, brief afternoon showers.
  • June to November Cool and dry, water from 19 degrees, rougher seas. High wildlife activity, sharks and large fish schools more common.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Snorkelling with sea lions

Encounters with sea lions, marine iguanas and Galapagos penguins in shallow water. A maximum of twenty guests keeps groups small and calm.

  2. Naturalist guides at park level III

The naturalist guides hold the highest licence class the national park issues. They interpret wildlife and geology rather than just walking routes.

  3. Island walks to the wildlife

Guided walks lead to blue-footed boobies, flightless cormorants and breeding colonies. The pace follows the animals, not the guests.

  4. Anchoring beyond the larger ships

The Explorer anchors in zones larger ships cannot reach; two alternating routes cover the western and eastern islands. Access others are denied.

Local Experiences

What shapes the stay.

  • Charles Darwin Research Station, Santa Cruz: the giant tortoise breeding centre is part of almost every itinerary and puts the archipelago's conservation work in concrete terms.
  • Diving at Kicker Rock (León Dormido), San Cristóbal: one of the best dive sites in the Pacific — hammerhead sharks, white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles in close range.
  • Bartolomé Island sunrise: the short ascent to the viewpoint above Pinnacle Rock at dawn — no equipment needed, and one of the visually most striking moments in the archipelago.
