Our Assessment

Why we recommend Andronis Boutique Hotel.

The iconic Santorini image as a hotel: built into the cliffs of Oia, with caldera views, pools and fine dining.

When it has to be exactly this Santorini picture — caldera, Oia, sunset — Andronis Boutique is our partner recommendation. Once we have been there ourselves, we will write more here.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel May to June and September to October

Santorini works best in the shoulder months of May/June and September/October, with 22 to 28 degrees and soft caldera light. July and August bring 30 degrees and more, full crowds in Oia and a strong Meltemi, the northerly summer wind that peaks in high summer. Winters are quiet, and many houses and tavernas close.

  • May to June 22 to 27 degrees, long bright days, the sea warming up. Caldera walk and sunset before the later crush.
  • July to August 30 degrees and more, heavy footfall in Oia, a strong northerly Meltemi. Boat trips can be postponed for weather.
  • September to October Warm sea, gentler light, calmer lanes. Among the most pleasant times on the island.
  • November to April Quiet low season, cool and at times windy. Many hotels and restaurants in Oia stay shut.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Caldera sunset sail

Sail into the caldera by catamaran from the small port of Ammoudi below Oia, past the hot springs of the volcanic islet of Nea Kameni, pausing to swim before the evening light.

  2. Descent to Ammoudi Bay

The roughly three hundred steps from Oia's main path down to the red-rock harbour of Ammoudi, where the fish tavernas sit right at the water. You can jump from the rock into deep water.

  3. Caldera walk from Oia to Fira

The roughly ten-kilometre ridge path along the rim of the caldera, through Imerovigli and Firostefani, with the bay in view throughout. Best early, before the sun is high.

  4. Wine tasting on volcanic soil

Santorini's vines grow in basket form close to the ground on volcanic ash, which shapes the Assyrtiko. A visit to one of the wineries around Megalochori connects the wine to the island's geology.
