Our Assessment

Why we recommend Avana Retreat.

Tucked into the mountains north of Hanoi — the most coherent retreat for experiencing the real northern Vietnam far from the coastal circuit.

We know this property personally. The drive from Hanoi takes three to four hours — we arrange private transfer. The Senna Hilltop Pool Villas sit higher than the Ferms Grand Mountain Suites and offer a wider view of the valley; choose them when available. The waterfall dinner should be requested well in advance.

Fit & Season

When this property truly shines.

Best season
October to April — the dry season brings clear mountain mornings and good visibility. In September the rice fields are at their greenest, though rain is possible.

What stays with you
Morning mist rising over the Mai Chau valley from the mountain terrace, candlelight dinner on the wooden deck beside the waterfall as the jungle returns to silence.
  • The mountain setting is the content of the stay: rice terraces, jungle paths, and a valley that reads entirely differently in morning mist than at midday.
  • The Senna Hilltop Pool Villas have freestanding bathtubs facing a panoramic window and a private infinity pool with mountain views — two qualities that rarely come together this convincingly.
  • The candlelight dinner on the waterfall platform is a real place in the resort, not a staged photograph.
  • The vintage jeep excursion across rice field tracks, guided river hikes, and yoga in the open pavilion give a stay depth without programme pressure.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel February to May for the central coast, October to April for Mai Chau

Vietnam is long and the weather varies sharply by region. The central coast around Hoi An and Quy Nhon is dry from February to August; the rains run September to December, when Hoi An sees most of its rainfall. Summer can turn very hot on the coast. Mai Chau in the mountains north of Hanoi, by contrast, has a cool, mostly dry winter from November to April at 17 to 22 degrees. A combined trip is best planned in the shoulder months of February to April.

  • February to May (Hoi An, Quy Nhon) Mild, largely dry weather on the central coast, ideal for beach, old town and boat trips. Quy Nhon stays dry a little longer than Hoi An.
  • November to April (Mai Chau, north) Cool, mostly dry mountain winter around 17 to 22 degrees. Golden rice fields and good conditions for walks and White Thai village visits.
  • September to December (central coast) Rainy season with the year's heaviest rainfall and occasional storms. Better avoided for Hoi An and Quy Nhon.
  • June to August (central coast) Dry but very hot and humid, with values well above 35 degrees. The water is pleasant, land excursions tiring.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Morning mist over the Mai Chau valley

From the mountain terrace the morning mist drifts over the rice terraces before the sun opens the valley. A quiet start to the day that explains the resort's setting.

  2. Candlelight dinner by the waterfall

On a wooden platform by the waterfall the house sets the table by candlelight while the surrounding jungle falls quiet. Not a staged photo spot, but a real place within the resort.

  3. Jeep drive through the White Thai villages

A vintage jeep follows the tracks between the rice fields to the stilt villages of the White Thai. Everyday encounters rather than a programme, arranged from the resort.

  4. Guided stream walk in the national park

A two- to three-hour walk crosses rocks and jungle streams in the surrounding national park. Sure-footed, with breaks at the water, a physical counterpoint to the quiet hours on the terrace.

Local Experiences

What shapes the stay.

  • Vintage Jeep excursion through the Mai Chau valley: rice field tracks and White Thai villages, organised from the resort.
  • River trekking in the national park: guided walks over rocks and through jungle streams, two to three hours.
  • Hanoi: the Old Quarter is three to four hours away — works well as an opening or closing chapter around an Avana stay.
