Three very different properties, one sensibility: a river resort in Hoi An, beach villas in Quy Nhon, and The Vietage luxury train connecting them — the most coherent way to experience central Vietnam in one journey.

The sequence Hoi An → Vietage → Quy Nhon is the more natural direction: town and river first, then the journey, then the sea. The Vietage does not run daily — book berths early. In Quy Nhon: Ocean View Pool Villa for the sea view from the bedroom, Beachfront Pool Villa for private beach access. An evening at the open fire at Sea.Fire.Salt restaurant in Quy Nhon is worth planning for.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel February to May for the central coast, October to April for Mai Chau

Vietnam is long and the weather varies sharply by region. The central coast around Hoi An and Quy Nhon is dry from February to August; the rains run September to December, when Hoi An sees most of its rainfall. Summer can turn very hot on the coast. Mai Chau in the mountains north of Hanoi, by contrast, has a cool, mostly dry winter from November to April at 17 to 22 degrees. A combined trip is best planned in the shoulder months of February to April.

  • February to May (Hoi An, Quy Nhon) Mild, largely dry weather on the central coast, ideal for beach, old town and boat trips. Quy Nhon stays dry a little longer than Hoi An.
  • November to April (Mai Chau, north) Cool, mostly dry mountain winter around 17 to 22 degrees. Golden rice fields and good conditions for walks and White Thai village visits.
  • September to December (central coast) Rainy season with the year's heaviest rainfall and occasional storms. Better avoided for Hoi An and Quy Nhon.
  • June to August (central coast) Dry but very hot and humid, with values well above 35 degrees. The water is pleasant, land excursions tiring.

What you come here for.

  1. Travelling by The Vietage between Hoi An and Quy Nhon

    The luxury train The Vietage links the two coastal resorts as an experience in itself: a panorama carriage, lounge bar and wine service while rice fields pass the window. The journey becomes part of the trip.

  2. Evening in the old town of Hoi An

    It is a ten-minute walk from the riverside resort into the UNESCO old town, which belongs to pedestrians in the evening. Lanterns, tailors' shops and food stalls, without the motorbike traffic of the day.

  3. Beach days on the coast of Quy Nhon

    The beachfront pool villas in Quy Nhon open onto one of the quietest coasts of central Vietnam, barely developed for tourism. A private pool, direct beach access and swimming off an empty sea.

  4. Trip to the Cham towers

    Brick towers of the Cham kingdom stand around Quy Nhon and Hoi An; the Banh It towers near Quy Nhon make a good half-day. A look at a culture that predates the Vietnamese shaping of the coast.
