Our Assessment

Why we recommend andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp.

andBeyond Nxabega — the most coherent way to truly understand the Okavango Delta between a mokoro and a star-filled sky.

We know this camp personally and recommend it as a combination with a dry bush camp — Nxabega provides the water experience no other camp offers in this purity. Access is by light aircraft from Maun; we coordinate the transfer. Ask us about the best season for your travel dates.

What stays with you
Silent mokoro glides through the Delta's reed channels each morning, evenings at the candlelit terrace watching the floodplains settle into dark.
  • Nine tents on a private tree island — the entire camp shares a maximum of eighteen guests.
  • Water and land alternate with the seasons: high water opens the channels for boats and mokoro, dry season opens the plains for game drives.
  • Hanging daybeds on the veranda are not an accessory but the real living space of the day.
  • The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and one of the last great inland delta ecosystems on earth.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel May to October

Botswana follows the water. In the dry season from May to October wildlife concentrates around shrinking waterholes, the grass is short and sightings are clear. The Okavango flood usually reaches the Nxabega concession between June and September, opening the channels for mokoro. The rains from December to March bring heat, storms and mosquitoes, but also newborns and migrant birds.

  • May to August (dry season, flood) Cool nights of 5 to 10C, days around 25C. High delta water levels, ideal for mokoro and boat. The best months for water safari.
  • September to October (late dry) Up to 35C by day, game crowds the waterholes. Densest drive sightings, but increasingly dusty and hot.
  • November to March (green season) Hot and humid with afternoon storms, tall grass obscures sightings. Newborns and birdlife; avoid if clear viewing matters most.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Powerboat through the delta waterways

When the annual flood reaches the 25,000-hectare Nxabega concession, boat trips run through open lagoons and papyrus channels, past hippos and waterbirds. A perspective the seated mokoro cannot offer.

  2. Guided bush walk on the island

An armed guide reads tracks and smaller creatures on foot across the wooded camp island and surrounding dry islands. The slow pace makes termite mounds, nests and spoor legible that a vehicle passes over.

  3. Searching for Pel's fishing owl

Nxabega records over 400 bird species, including the rare and shy Pel's fishing owl in the riverine woodland. The guides know the daytime roosts, making a sighting of this otherwise elusive bird realistic.

  4. Catch-and-release fishing in the delta

The deeper channels allow fishing for tigerfish and bream, strictly catch and release. A quiet day on the water for guests who read the delta as more than a wildlife stage.
