Our Assessment

Why we recommend Daios Cove.

Mediterranean luxury with its own bay: deliberately not ultra-luxury, but very well done — and relaxed precisely because of it.

Daios Cove is a partner property we recommend when Greece should be easy to reach yet the house must still hold a standard of its own. To be honest about it: luxury, not ultra-luxury — but with a bay, pools and a very fair ratio of effort to effect.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel May to June and September to October

Crete has one of the longest seasons in Greece, because the south coast stays mild well into the year. May/June and September/October bring 23 to 29 degrees, a warm sea and manageable crowds. July and August reach 32 degrees and more, with busy coasts and a hot interior. October holds longer here than in the Cyclades, with sea temperatures that still allow swimming.

  • May to June 23 to 28 degrees, green landscape, quiet bays. A good time for the Lasithi plateau and trips to Spinalonga.
  • July to August 32 degrees and more, busy coasts, a hot interior. Early hours and shaded terraces are most comfortable.
  • September to October Warm sea into October, gentle light, fewer guests. One of the best windows for the island.
  • November to March Quieter, cooler months with occasional rain. The mountains can hold snow and many beach houses close.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Morning in the private cove

The house's private cove sits below the terraced slopes, reached by lift. Clear water for a swim before the sun is high.

  2. Boat trip to Spinalonga

By boat from Agios Nikolaos or Plaka to the Venetian fortress island that was a leper colony until 1957. The walls and lanes are largely intact.

  3. Drive up to the Lasithi plateau

Up to the fertile high plateau with its old windmills and villages, past the Psychro cave that myth names as the birthplace of Zeus.

  4. Evening in Agios Nikolaos

The small harbour town with Lake Voulismeni at its centre, ringed by tavernas and bars. A quiet waterside promenade, about twenty minutes from the cove.
