Our Assessment

Why we recommend andBeyond Punakha River Lodge.

Twelve suites on the Mo Chhu — the most immersive way to experience Bhutan beyond the standard dzong circuit.

We know the property personally. The drive over the Dochu La is part of the arrival — three hours from Paro, every bend worth it. Plan at least four nights: two days are not enough to settle in. We handle Bhutan entry permits and lodge reservations.

What stays with you
Breakfast after the morning hike to Khamsum Yuelley Chorten: a laid table on the hillside, the Punakha Valley below, no other guests in sight.
  • andBeyond's first property in Bhutan, opened in 2023 — twelve suites, no mass tourism.
  • Private riverside dinner on the Mo Chhu under prayer flags: a signature experience no other lodge in Bhutan replicates.
  • Morning yoga on the river deck, afternoon white-water rafting on the Pho Chhu — the lodge delivers both without detours.
  • The Fandam kitchen: guests cook Bhutanese dishes in a traditional farmhouse alongside staff — genuine exchange, not a tourist performance.

Climate & best time to travel

When it rewards you most.

Best time to travel October to December and March to May

Bhutan reads best in the dry months. The Punakha valley sits lower than Thimphu or Paro and stays milder, with daytime figures around 12 to 27 degrees depending on the season. The summer monsoon from June to August brings 300 to 500 mm of rain to the valley, slick trails and clouded mountain views. Spring and autumn are the dependable windows for treks, festivals and clear panoramas.

  • October to December Clear air, blue skies and daytime values around 17 to 27 degrees once the monsoon has passed. The best window for mountain views, walks and the black-necked cranes that move into the valley. Nights turn cold.
  • March to May Rhododendrons and fruit blossom, gentle hiking weather around 12 to 23 degrees. Peak season with lively valleys; a good frame for the climb to Tiger's Nest near Paro.
  • June to August Summer monsoon with heavy rain, high humidity and often hidden peaks. Better avoided when treks and long views are the priority.

Experiences

What you come here for.

  1. Climb to the Khamsum Yuelley Chorten

A morning path leads across rice terraces and a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu up to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, which stands above the valley. Painted interiors and the wide view back to the lodge wait at the top.

  2. Walk to Chimi Lhakhang

Through the fields near Sopsokha, the way leads to Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century temple of Drukpa Kunley. The walk through the village is as much part of it as the temple itself.

  3. Rafting on the Mo Chhu

A calm stretch on the Mo Chhu passes the Punakha Dzong, with views of the banks, herons and the fortress from the water. A relaxed alternative to the white water of the Pho Chhu.

  4. Day trip to Tiger's Nest near Paro

For guests who want to see more of Bhutan, the climb to the Taktshang monastery near Paro, clinging to a cliff face, can be arranged. The way up takes several hours and asks for some fitness.

Local Experiences

What shapes the stay.

  • Punakha Dzong: the 17th-century fortress at the confluence of two rivers — arrive early, before day visitors.
  • Traditional archery lesson with lodge staff — Bhutan's national sport, taken seriously.
  • Walk through rice terraces and Bhutanese villages: not a guided tourist trek, but a stroll through everyday life.
