Best time to travel May to September
South Africa's reserves are strongest in winter from May to September: dry, cool and with receding vegetation that aids sightings. Sabi Sand and Phinda are subtropical and stay comfortable by day, with cold morning drives. Summer from October to March brings heat, storms, dense green, newborns and migrant birds, but harder viewing. Madikwe is malaria-free and Phinda low-risk.
- May to September (dry season, winter) Days around 22 to 26C, cold morning drives near freezing. Low vegetation, best Big Five sightings.
- October to February (summer, rains) Hot above 35C, afternoon storms, dense bush. Newborns and birdlife, but viewing is harder.
- March to April (transition) Easing rains, still-green landscape, pleasant temperatures. A good compromise of visibility and atmosphere.

Cheetah tracking through the sand forest
Phinda is regarded as one of the best places for cheetah sightings after their reintroduction some fifty years on. The tracking leads through the rare dry sand forest, among the last 1,000 hectares of its kind.

Black rhino work with the conservation team
The reserve holds the rare black rhino, and guests can join the monitoring team for procedures such as dehorning or ear-notching. Conservation that is shown rather than described.

Drive through the seven habitats
Phinda combines forest, grassland, wetland and mountain ranges across nearly 30,000 hectares. A full-day drive across the habitats shows how wildlife and vegetation change completely within one reserve.

Tracking suni and red duiker in the sand forest
The rare sand forest shelters the tiny suni and red duiker antelope, seldom seen elsewhere. A slow morning with the guide makes these inconspicuous animals the actual goal.
